Comparisons

Many communities and schools are wrestling with the choice between artificial turf and natural grass fields. Here are some things to consider.

• What is the total capital investment required to construct a new natural grass or artificial turf field? What is the cost of renovating an existing grass field?

• What level of funding is required for regular maintenance of the field?

• What is the life expectancy of the artificial turf? Where will it be stored, processed, or disposed of at the end of its useful life? Obtain documentation on where the materials will be disposed of or reused at the end of the product’s useful life.

• What is the safety record of artificial turf vs. natural grass? Which surface is preferred by professional athletes?

• How do turf managers deal with body fluid spills?

• How is the field affected by temperature?

• How does weather affect the playability of the field?

• What is the environmental impact of the field during construction, operation and disposal?
